The Woodhouse Day Spa will be opening a new location at 5004 West Esplanade Ave. This will be the third location in the metro area for the luxury day spa concept joining their mid-city and Slidell locations.

The Metairie space will be slightly larger than the mid-city location. It will feature a wide menu of spa services including relaxation rooms allowing clients to spend the entire day at the spa. The Woodhouse’s Giselle McBee told Around Metairie, “We want to bring Metairie a place of luxury, a place to escape, a true spa experience right in your own backyard.”

MAAS (Metairie Academy for Advanced Studies) will be holding its 2019 Starry Night Gala event helping to raise funds for educational tools, equipment & facility improvements at the school. The school which originally started as Metairie Grammar School in 1939 became the first Jefferson Parish elementary magnet school during the 2004-2005 school year. It has the honor of being a US Department of Education National Blue Ribbon School.

Event organizers are seeking businesses to help donate merchandise, services or gift certificates for an auction at the gala. Sponsorshipships are also avalaible. For more information regarding donations or sponsorships send an email to: maasgaladonate@gmail.com.

Tickets to the event can be purchased online at: https://501auctions.com/MAAS. The gala will be held on March 22nd at Southport Hall. The evening will feature food, drinks, entertainment and auctions.

Marrero’s Daiwa Sushi Bar & Japanese Cusine will be opening an east bank location when they take over the 2nd-floor space at 4100 Veterans Blvd. This is the space that was previously home to World of Beer.

A Daiwa representative told Around Metairie that they are “in the final phases of renovation, putting up fixtures, and equipment” with an opening planned for April.

CarMax, the largest used automobile dealer in the country, has opened its massive store located along I-10 near the Esplanade Mall. The large facility located at 1601 32nd St. in Kenner displays nearly 350 used vehicles for sale. It was reported that 80 employees were hired to work at the new store.

Diamonds Direct, a North Carolina based jewelry retailer, will be taking over the former Bennett’s Camera at 3230 Severn Ave. across from Lakeside Shopping Center. Bennet’s Camera relocated to 3521 18th St. in Fat City.

The current building will remain but will go through a major remodel. Demolition work has already begun.

Hungry diners will be able to start chomping on giant-sized slices of pizza tomorrow when Fat Boy’s Pizza opens at 2565 Metairie Road.

The Fat Boy’s concept is certainly a unique one when it comes to Metairie’s pizza landscape. Instead of focusing on offering whole pizzas Fat Boy’s sells pizza by the slice which in some cases may be as big as a whole pizza. They also offer pizza shop staples including hoagies, wings, and a few types of salads.

Fat Boy’s is located along a section of Metairie Road which is seeing much development. It shares a shopping complex with several other newer businesses including Shipley Do-Nuts.

Work is moving along on Shake Shack’s Metairie location (formerly Lager’s) at Severn and Veterans. Crews have been stripping away the outer skin of the building and have completely removed the patio overhang. Shake Shack is a hot national chain featuring burgers, fries, and shakes.

Mandeville-based Voelkel McWilliams Construction, LLC is handling the construction.

Chick-Fil-A at 3870 Veterans Blvd. is closing temporarily to expand their kitchen. Work has already begun but the restaurant will need to close on March 1st to further the project. They plan to reopen in April.

La Madeleine shuttered their previous Elmwood Shopping Center location on Clearview Parkway in December in preparation for their new location. Construction is well underway and shaping up nicely on the new La Madeleine.

The new restaurant will be located directly next to the vacant Kmart which will soon be demolished and redeveloped as a mixed-use building with retail and apartments.

La Madeline expects to open this spring. Construction is being handled by Perrier Esquerre Contractors, LLC.
