Work is underway to transform the now-closed Cafe Roma at 1101 North Causeway Blvd. to an outpost of Moe’s Original BBQ. Moe’s describes its concept as a “Southern soul food revival”. Their menu features a wide selection of all the items you would expect at a BBQ joint along with fried catfish and shrimp.

The chain has locations throughout several states and this will be their 2nd Louisiana location. According to The Advocate this location is being developed by Bryan Hargett, Stephen Lane, and Josh Alston.

LCMC Health opened its new Metairie health center at 2121 Ridgelake Drive. The building located next to Crescent City Medical Center sits at 4-stories and just over 45,000 square feet.

Services offered at the new facility include:

• Pediatric Specialty Care (provided by Children’s Hospital)
• Cancer Care & Infusion Center (provided by Touro)
• Adult Primary Care & Specialty Services (provided by Touro’s Crescent City Physicians)
• Imaging Center

Contstruction was completed by Metairie-based The McDonnel Group in cojunction with Sizeler Thompson Brown Architects.

Amid concerns from neighborhood residents, Jefferson Parish is putting any potential permit requests on hold for a proposed Metairie Road condo development project until it can be discussed in more detail. 

A sign recently posted on the property advertising the condo project has spurred hundreds of online comments from neighbors concerned about the size and scope of the project. The concerned neighbors reached out to Jefferson Parish Councilwoman Jennifer Van Vracken who held a meeting with the residents.

According to media reports, Metairie attorney Jim Hall has proposed building the six-story condo project at the site. “The neighbors who lived nearby had consistently been told that it would be a three-story development,” Van Vrancken said. The advertised development, however, is showing a six-story building. 

Phina has added a third location of their home accessory, gift, and kids shops. The latest location opened last week at 2561 Metairie Rd. in the same shopping strip as Shipley Do-Nuts and Main Squeeze Juice Co. 

The Phina concept grew from Paradise Cafe and Gifts operated in Metairie for nearly 20 years by Linda Dalton. Dalton’s daughters Jenny McGuinness and Jessica Woodward rebranded the business as Phina in late 2016. 

These ventures are the not the first for the family. From 1959-1995 the family owned and operated Paradise Lanes bowling alley at the same site as Metairie’s Barnes & Noble store. The original Phina location is located in the same building as Barnes & Noble. 

And the name Phina… well that is in the family as well. The sisters’ great grandmother’s nickname was Phina.

When we stopped by last week construction work was nearing completion at 5.11 by Karl Malone in Metairie’s Lafreniere Plaza Shopping Center at 6601 Veterans Blvd. The specialty retailer will feature men’s and women’s apparel, footwear, bags and more gear manufactured by 5.11 Tactical.

5.11 Tactical offers products for law enforcement, first responders and has expanded to the outdoor and fitness markets. The 5,000 square foot Metairie store will be operated by NBA Hall-of-Famer Karl “The Mailman” Malone. He also operates the Ruston, LA store. “The 5.11 brand is built on the foundation of durability, quality and value. Our store will be well stocked with the perfect performance clothing and accessories for any professional or recreational mission.”, said Malone. 

The store is expected to open in early 2019. 

Rooms to Go has been remodeling it’s nearly 70,000 square foot Metairie showroom (formerly Kirschman’s Furniture) in phases while keeping the store open. The new look is dramatically different featuring a large glass storefront with an arched entryway which is a prototype design concept for the furniture chain. Rooms To Go Metairie held its grand opening this past Saturday.

As Nola.com reports, Manny Randazzo opens up his North Hullen shop for 10 days before Christmas (opening at 8 a.m. and running until they run out usually in the late afternoon). He calls it a “practice run” for the huge carnival season business that he does every year which will begin on January 3rd for his shop. 

Jefferson Parish will dedicate Dep. James Clarius Drive on Monday, December 17, 2018, at 10 AM in front of the Jefferson Performing Arts Center at 6400 Airline Drive in Metairie. The public is invited to attend.

Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office Deputy Clarius was shot while in the line of duty on October 5, 1996.
